Yet another nice job, Matty. No need for apologies when it comes to your descriptions.
BTW: -I just love the sound and motion of that shaper!
I was a bit concerned that the cross slide would bind on its gib/ dovetails when you tightened it down for the first time,
as I personally think the cross slide's longitudinal T-slots are actually weakening it, where it really should be the strongest.
One of these days I'll come around making a new, longer and somewhat thicker cross slide for my 7 x14",
with (Myford-ish) transverse T-slots for mounting the compound when threading, or a simple rigid tool holding block or milling slide.
But then, as you said - many other jobs to take on at work and in the family home...

That works similar to a Pitkin Donut but the base has even more area for a more rigid compound. I made a donut for my 9x19 as my first project and I've been completely happy with it and it was much easier to make than any of the four bolt solutions that are the rave of the interwebs. I know you'll be proud of and happy with that project.
