Hi all. I found this site and found it very interesting and helpful. I am just entering the world of small metal lathe work as a hobby and will be looking for ideas. I also hope to offer my ideas along the road.

At the moment I would like to add a digital RPM readout to my 7 x 14 lathe.

Welcome to HMT. I think you are looking for the RPM tachometer technology such as the one at http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/m...3147#post15859 or at http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/1...6430#post22140 . These installations are easy to do and are based on using Hall Effect sensors with a single magnet on the lathe spindle shaft. The parts are very inexpensive and available on eBay.
