Alaska airlifts Into the Wild bus - photo

The Alaska Army National Guard airlifted the famous Into the Wild bus located near the Teklanika river around Healy, Alaska, with a CH-47 Chinook. This was the bus where Chris McCandless starved to death in an ill-conceived attempt to pursue a live-off-the-land fantasy.

The bus had been a dangerous attraction for adventurers, whose trips had caused 15 bus-related search and rescue operations over the years.

I'm Forrest McCanless. I was at GA Tech in downtown when Chris was at Emory in East Atlanta , though I never knew him.

My great-grandfather McCandless had taken the "d" from our name way back, after some family drama, and cut his/our line off from the rest of the McCan(d)less folks in the Southeast, and never associated with them again - weird. I still don't really know what was up - I'll ask my dad someday.

    Forrest in Atlanta

    Huh. Small world.

Also my grandmother added a letter to the family name, because she liked it better that way. I gained an "e". Livingston -> Livingstone. Weird.
