Angle grinder pipe sander attachment. - quick mount -

Hi

Made an attachment to my angle grinder.
Its for sanding pipes and curved edges. For smoothening welds, rust & paint removing...

Wanted to keep it simple as possible.
Later im going to update it with dust guard and removable backing plate, for using it like regular belt sander.

Ring under the "locking plate" leans to the spring washer.
Body is made from two 3mm thick plates.
This gives more strenght, but also adjust wheels to the same level.

Slide to the tension system, is made from 2mm sheet and 4mm plate. Shape of the casing (2mm) gives support to the actual slide (4mm) from all sides.

Can be used with 20 and 40mm wide belts.
Belts are bought, wheels (52mm with 16mm hole, M16 nut locks the drive wheel ) from the skateboard.

Here's simplified plans from it.

I designed this to be used with 520mm and 533mm long belts

Those are 1-2 euros each, so i didn't found reason to make my own.

White washers are made from nylon, and shaped to cone.

Reason for those is to keep spring centered, this allows it to move without touching the sides.

This gives better operation to it.

Parts of the slide are sprayed with silicone spray for better slide.

8mm axle has 20mm long M8 thread at the end.

Thickness of the disc guards locking fingers was 3mm, so i made locking plate from 3mm plate.

Because i had no big enough hole saw ( 42 mm needed ), i marked the needed diameter with compass.

And made biggest hole that i could to remove most of the material ( i had 32mm ), and used rotary tool and tungsten carbide cutter to remove rest. I finished the shape with hand files. This was actually somewhat simple task, and took only an hour to finish.

Mounting "fingers" wasn't located symmetrically, so i used fit, mark and file more method, instead trying to accurately measure or mark the locations.

I actually understand just how difficult it is to do a decent video edit which is why I appreciate well done videos.

As might be expected this thread created interest in your press design. I've been looking that over for inspiration but I think you missed one part on the bill of materials list. That is the plate the Hydraulic Ram passed through on the sled. Either that or I missed it.

Its very possible that i missed it.
I don't make plans before i build something.
I make designing on my mind and take needed measures while making. Plans are made after the build was done, and i hate that. �� So, most likely i have missed it. Fortunatelly one can decide its fize by themself. It just guides ram, i measured it so that its easy to weld the to the sides and hole is centered with sled.

No need to Hate that Tuomas. I think most of us build stuff on the fly and your builds are spectacular, especially done on the fly!! I know that Paul and I use notebooks to document or flush out ideas/calcs ahead of time then refine the notes later but the idea of preserving the ideas is important, imho. As for BOM's (Bill of Materials), whelp most of it is scrounged and salvaged so a BOM with "Scrap 3mm steel plate XX size" is the best you can do for others. But, like you say it's seeing how you did it that leads to new ideas or ways that work for us individually is the Most Important aspect to the HMT's crowd, and to me especially.

I also agree that your video quality has improved expertly over time, by adding great overlays, shot framing, lighting (Excellent in my book) as well as the fun to this type of work.

Keep'em coming...the diversity and Enginerding you bring is Inspiring! Respect!!

Sorry.. i need to correct. I like to work the way that i do. Its much faster to think alternative methods or designs, than draw them to the paper / screen. No need to erase things.
Mostly, why i like to make things, is to see can i and to find solution how.

Sometimes its more satisfying to find a solution for making a single hole, than finishing the actual project.

When i made holder to my inverted jack. I made that large hole for the jacks neck with adjustable wood cutter. Sharpened broken HSS drill and used it as a blade. Tried three different shapes to find working shape for it.

Blade cracked when hole went trough, but it worked long enough. That was one happy moment for me. :)

What i "hate" is to draw plans afterwards, from something that's allready made. It kind of feels making it again. Very boring...

And.. Thank you very much from the feedback. I have tried to pay more attention to the filming process, but for me. Making is the main thing, sometimes i just forget to turn on the camera, or point it wrong direction. Couple times i have re-made parts, because i forgot to take a video. :D

That's actually something that i have planned to make someday.

Mate, I'm an old bike guy, from the 70s when we yanks loved Euro road bikes, like Raleigh, Peugout, Bianchi, and especially Italian, Colnago, Poliaghi (sp) etc. Canpagnolo components were the top of the line... a 'full Campy' bike was the best.. about $600 back then, with either Reynolds (English) or Columbus (Italian) chrome/manganese moly double butted tubing with careful silver brazing. Beautifull, light and responsive bikes. Thanks for the memory

Yep. When you build things for your own use, with the tools that you have. ( bought or done by yourself ). Its somewhat obvious that others can't dublicate the whole process.

There's 1000+ angle grinder hacks on youtube, 100+ most popular are made from the old style mounting, and all somewhat similar way.
Decided to make mine to be little different. Of course, "old way" would give more U-tube views and more money... but then it would have been just another copy again. Imo.

So. Reason why i made this, even that it more likely gets less views or visibility, was that i want to make things way that i haven't seen before.

Sometimes it really pisses me, when i believe that i got whole new idea, and then notice that someone made something similar last week.

That's actually only "bad" thing in this forum, so many great ideas that its really difficult to make something that's not allready been made. :)

Good one bruce.desertrat! :thumbsup: When I read the “defective smartphone charging cases” I busted up and envisioned the old B/W video of the guy on the rocket bike with the LiPo's going off in a spectacular fashion and the guy grinning ear to ear wobbling down the country road. I could go on about all the hack of the build...but it's always amazing to me how many angels are hanging around taking care of those that push the envelope. :D

Some of the things that I find interesting about your builds is: 1- using the tool itself plus your other mods or HMT's to build the mods or New tools is constant and adaptive (quite the loop). 2- the ingenuity of your builds using good design practices and forward thinking of its uses and possible future builds/uses. 3- perhaps most important is the joy of the builds I see in your videos. I could go on but have some reservations about being a fan-boy instead of someone that appreciates quality design, builds and having fun doing it, over cranking out crap to get views or lack luster one line comments about how cool that is.

I've been on YT a long time now and removed all my vids years ago because I didn't like where it was going, however there are only ~2 handfuls that I watch regularly, comment or thumbs up on out of 120 subs. The reason for this is I learn something or see something that triggers something I've been pondering or wrestling with and the Quality of the build and edutainment value I get from all the work people put into it. It's not about SEO's imho, they will come if the above is met. The ratio's of likes/dislikes, # of views, and # of Subs to the quality of comments is an interesting statistical conundrum to me, but is tell tale of the every changing times we live through...and is predictive even without the AI google uses to garner...something...but I digress.

I get it about thinking you had that idea first and it does piss me off sometimes too, especially when I go through my old notebooks looking for something and find this or that, that someone else brought to fruition...and got paid for it! @¿@ Either way they had the giddy-up to get it to some level, crap or not.

Smoother joining between belt and fasing.

Little cut to the upper part of the facing, then bend.
Edge chamfered and cut to tilted line.

That post wasn't actually for Beserkleyboy, more like generally. Its very usual that people comments on u-tube that i should use " common " tools. So, that was more like general answer.

Its quite usual that tought " why i didn't think that", comes to my mind when i read threads here.
Sometimes being surrounded with smart people makes you feel little stupid. :)
But, that's just a good thing, when i feel stupid, i pay more attention for what i am reading. It kind of brings feets back to the ground.

Dust collector..

Dust collector is made from stainless steel.

Curve is cut from the 60mm pipe, three plates are from 2mm thick sheet.

Welds are made with tig, all welds are placed to the edges, that gives nicer looking final result. ( no disortion )

Pieces are cut with angle grinder.

22mm hole at the center point of the curve is drilled with cutter blade.

8mm hole that connects dust collector to the sander is done with 8mm twistdrill.

3D printed connector for vacuum cleaner.

And its ready.

Shape is designed for to be "nice" for the hand, loosening belt for changing can be done by pressing from the dust collector.

To keep sander tool free, i weld pieces of 2mm stainless steel to bolt and nut that holds the rest.

I weld little bigger plate pieces to the nut / bolt first.

After that i shaped wings to desired shape, finally clamped nut to the vise and twisted wing with wrench.

Then i polished welds with steelbrush.

Result is larger right angled grinding area and tool free adjust for the rest, keeping sides of the rest clear.

I think this project shows well my way to make things..

I film a video when i build a sketch.. then i do some planning.. and finally add couple pictures to show the final result. :)

Definitely the Epic Super hero of getting the Most and Best out of tools. Love the flight of the Valkyries!! Think you are getting your money's worth out of that vice resto also!! Does the belt fold over on the bearing end after a while?

Fixing that vise really was a good decision. Cost about 10$. New that kind of heavy duty vise would have been somewhat pricey. Also, that shape makes it more handy for my use.

Belt folds around the edges of the bearings after couple seconds of use with full speed. That keeps belt running straight.
I made first version with three bearings, that didn't work as well it does with two.

Thanks for sharing the strikingly well detailed description of your build as well as demonstrating the many various uses for it and the quick changeability to go from grinder mode to belt sander in a matter of a few seconds

I have a bad habit to skip those examples of use when build is finished, when you just know that it works..
Kinda don't bother to search material, and sometimes my mind just feels empty that moment.

I try to fix that on the future. I think my videos / builds could be little better if i use little more time for the actual video making too. :)

I know what you mean I'm not good at making videos , never learned to do editing and could never be a George lucas or Steve Cameran if I tried
My wife and a couple of friends say I can write better fiction than John De'Chance or Robert Ludium because my transposing style or wording could scare Stephen King or cause Ron Hubbard to roll over in his grave, But I'll probably never publish any of the dozen novels I have started Mostly because I think their opinions are just biased, that and once I get to 100,000 words or so I loose interest in them and never bring them to an end.
But tool use or making videos is something I really need to concentrate on learning how to make and edit
