reckon they're getting full depth with that method, or simply filling the top of the gap only?

This is cosmetic only. I am not a small man and I have to say applying grout is the hardest work that I have ever done. Your inconstant push and pull for all you are worth or you are not getting proper penetration. Love it when it's done! Not so much when I am doing it.
