I built one of these about 10 years ago, and have used it a bunch. Works great!
You could put a grove in the ram for clearance for the welded seam in the guide tube. Use the milling machine or a grinder. I do this all the time. I have also welded shims to the sides of the ram or the internal sides of the guide tube.
