BALANCED LATHE DOG
I needed a lathe dog to drive a between-centers boring bar. Not wanting to fiddle with balance weights, I made this balanced version that has two drive pins (Photos 1 - 3).
The bars are 12x12 mm square bar with a “V” cut in the middle to suit the diameter of the stock to be driven by the dog. Mine should work for diameters of 12 – 50 mm. A 10 mm round bar drive pin was welded on near the end of each bar and the two sections are held together with M6 hex-socket bolts (Photo 4). The design can be scaled up or down as required. In use the lathe dog and boring bar assembly runs smoothly with no discernable vibration.
