I wonder if they do that in the water to make it safer to deal with the occasional tarantula they encounter

Placing it in the water tank makes the bunch more manageable, or it's weight would be impossible to hold it up with one hand whilst cutting with the other. Also, the pieces cut off don't fall and bruise.
