I noticed the jaws on my bench vise were getting kinda ratty looking so I decided it was time to make a new pair, just happened to have some 1/2” X 1” O-1 steel on hand which should hold up good after hardening and tempering, for a day or two anyway.
Making the grip pattern was kind of a tossup between the traditional X pattern or some narrow slots at a 45° angle, after a little while thinking about it I came up with this different looking grip pattern, the pattern was machined on the face of the jaws using a 1-1/2" diameter fly cutter with a 80°pointed carbide tool standing vertical and plunging .020” deep, I started cutting the pattern from one end of the jaws and advancing .300” at a time which gave me that cross hatch look.
I took a few photos of the machining process and with the jaws installed.
As always thanks for looking and happy machining.
