Companies like Garret Air Research and Sperry Aerospace would hire every Watchmaker who had lost his job in New York after the advent of the digital wristwatch. This analog instrument is why the airway "vertical separation minimums" between aircraft, up until the late 1990's was held to 1,000 feet. As air data computers went "digital" in the 1980's, and began using solid-state sensors, flight level separations would eventually reduced to 500 feet, allowing more aircraft into our already crowded airspace.
