Yes, I'm in the generation that watched Twighlight Zone: The Movie. Never will forget that segment of the movie with John Lithgow.

I read a book "Aerodynamic: Inside the High-Stakes Global Jetliner Ecosystem" that explained about the certification of passenger jets with four, three and two engines. It had to do with a number of factors besides obviously the reliability of jet engines. It also was heavy into the battle between Boeing and Airbus. To some, it may sound as exciting as swatting flies but it really was a very interesting history. I highly recommend it to anyone who would enjoy such a book. If the local library doesn't have it they can obtain it through ILL. Or it is cheap on Ebay as are tons of titles.

If that thing were to pop the rest of the way you would need four wings even if you had four engines.
