strong tide? the wind is blowing in the opposite direction, you see the tug pull back to protect itself, but the flow on the pylons suggest that the water is carrying the ship along... no sails out, so I must presume river or tidal flow.

It appears the ship lost power. It would not (or at least SHOULD NOT) have been operating under sail in those close quarters under those conditions. Of course we have no idea how much time they had before contacting the bridge after they lost power. Trying to push the ship broadside to the current is never a good idea. Would have been more prudent to attach a line to the bow or stern and get the ship turned to present the most streamlined profile to the current.

Wouldn't it have been a better idea to have both tugs on one side of the ship?
