Why waste all the effort to stack the bricks when you know you have to tear them down again to add the mortar/ Personally I wouldn't build up a brick column unless there was a steel pipe core in it. IMO bricks are not good as structural

I think he's just demonstrating it.

And how do you get it plumb? It’s an interesting jig, but I was hoping for proper demonstration.
