That had to be a horrible feeling. Your fiberglass and plastic bucket is blazing above you while you are hanging on your fall arrest safety harness 15 to 20 feet off the ground. None of your work mates are even making any attempt to access or activate the emergency lowering procedures of the boom. Then your safety line parts and you fall directly into the fire on the ground.

That and the second bucket truck drove through the fire on the ground instead of staging up wind of the flames to get the guy down. If I managed to survive that, it would be the very LAST day to work that that crew!!

Yeah, that looked bad. How long did he hang there before someone came over with a hose which looked more substantial than a garden hose? No emergency bleed on the boom hydraulics?

I’ve heard that fall arrest gear is great to prevent a full fall but there needs to be a solid plan for the person hanging should they fall.

Fall arresting gear was primarily designed for iron workers to create a reasonably controlled descent from the floor level they fell from to the next floor below in high rise building. And function almost flawlessly in those situations, although as any ironworker will tell you. You hope you are never the one dangling from the string.

An emergency bleed off is a required standard and easily accessible from the ground on all hydraulic man lift equipment
