Not only pumping water for fire suppression, I might add.
They [centrifugal] come in a range of sizes; not counting axials, rotary vanes, turbines, bowl columns, positive displacement, even those pumping trash and sewage.
I deleted a gif of one we serviced. Shot water straight out of 10" bypass about 12 feet, diesel driven. They run at full capacity even with 1 sprinkler head activated. As others pop, the line/s/ are already pressurized. Very effective system. Fire departments demand them for inhabited establishments. Insurance companies like them in things to protect property, like parking structures. Experienced system guys just look at the engine [or motor] and branch pipe and know how many square feet it serves.
There is quite an industry involved with installations, service, testing, repairs; most of it can be done onsite. Even the piping, one length can be removed without disturbing remainder as they aren't threaded, but clamped by a seal and 2-piece iron band. Another industry of it's own!
