They pull this **** in Australia as well. They couldn't possibly sell them or donate them to trade schools, I'm in education and am constantly told we have no money for "that" I was once told there was no money for new light bulbs! Currently I'm having to beg and grovel for a bit more square footage in the workshop. A couple of those cars would cover the cost.

Its the same as Odumbo's cash for clunker's fiasco pandering to the climate change radicals. Giving them a feel good moment in a photo op trying to convince the little people they are protecting the planet.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

A few years ago, my neighbor phoned and told me I'd better hook up my little utility trailer, and head to the metal pile at our local dump. He said it looked like someone had dumped the remnants of a body shop. As I pulled up to the pile, I recognized the metal, as exercise equipment... much of it was powder coated... pulleys, cable, stainless steel, etc. I made three trips, hauling the stuff home. I paid scrap price for the loads, total cost for me was $65. Story was that the high school had received a grant to equip a new exercise/weight room, so threw out all of the old stuff. Rather than donate the gear to a country school, or sell it, someone made the decision to just dump it. And these people teach our children.
My first project, using this metal, was a keg lift for a local brewery. It stacks kegs three high, powered by a drill driver.
I guess I don't understand why government agencies would simply destroy stuff like that. In my law enforcement career, I have seen cars and trucks with altered or obliterated VIN's be renumbered by the state, retitled and sold and the state given the money. "Illegally- imported vehicles?" What does that mean? "Someone in authority did not get their palm properly greased with money?" Lots of possibilities and good parts literally destroyed. Would make for a neat TV show entitled "What can you make from this illegal stuff?"
