Parents and politicians would have kittens and cry all kinds of child brutality here in the USA, if a program like this were to be suggested. Which serves to prove the fact the that the education systems in Asian countries far and again surpass anything in western countries.
My dad used to take me to the shop where he worked before I was old enough to walk. Place me on a large furniture comforter and give me things like screwdrivers small wrenches and worn-out small car parts to play with. Those were my toys. By the time I was 4 or 5 I was helping him work on vehicles and equipment. By holding a droplight or handing him wrenches or holding a backup wrench. Or rebuilding a carburetor for him while he was doing something else. I could change oil, do tuneups and grease tractors or cars before I was old enough to start school in the first grade.

100%. I hire 20 year olds out of university to do engineering work. They've never seen vise grips, used a drill press, or seen a wrench. I'm really not joking. It's worse than you can imagine. I wouldn't trust them to hang a picture frame on the wall. How are they going to design machinery? The only ones that are remotely useful are the ones who grew up on a farm and were fixing things all day. We're going to get steam rolled by China and you know what, we've earned it.
