    If you look carefully once the brass is melted the impurities are drawn off in a single lump. that is the glass drawing the impurities together

    I use clear glass, not coloured. I was told that it melts and forms a "skin" over the molten metal to prevent air coming in - thereby reducing the amount of created slag/ dross. As Frank indicated, it helps pull the dross together as well making it easier to remove.
