The word is French, not British.

The Norman invasion of Britain guaranteed that good old Germanic English would be littered with French vocabulary. Ever notice that the word for the livestock is English and the word for the meat derived from that animal is French ?

cow boeuf
sheep mouton
pig porc
deer venaison

After the invasion, the folks tending the animals were British serfs and the folks enjoying the meat were French invaders.
