Hedger and topper. Citrus is a true shrub. They do best trimmed as you would your hedge. Citrus plantings are so massive it is financially forbidding to attempt to prune them by hand. At one time citrus was planted so closely that rows would be continuous, a single hedge. That technique has been abandoned and such plantations are thinned 1/3, that is leaving two contiguous trees and removing the third. In modern plantings the trees are spaced to allow for good air circulation all around the trees. That helps to reduce fungicide usage, a good thing. As in other fruit bearing perenials, non-drupe that is, fruit bears on the tips of new growth. Thus hedging and topping is a regular event. The blades rotate as the arms revolve them. It's a frightening machine, and you don't want to get too close. The good thing is it would only hurt for a moment, and there wouldn't be much left to bury.

Amen, and thanks for the great info. Never new that. Neighbor has a couple of Big Myer lemons and they are trimming them regularly. Now I know why.

    Thanks,
