Clamps as a vice
Just an old trick I have in the arsenal and thought I will share it.
When you need to plane a plank on its side and do not have a bench vice close at hand, I do the following.
Use 2 fairly large clamps, not sure what you call these type, but by clamping one the one way round and the other the other way round you can get a fairly steady set up. If you plan it right you can actually stand on the one closest to you to prevent the whole set up moving forward as you plane. Especially if you would to be using a manual hand plane.
