Compact Hold Down Clamp Support

Occasional machinist's helical milling clamps are amazing. I encourage all of you to view his entry.

I was inspired by the idea but not equipped to make these cuts on my mill. Yet, the idea of a compact hold-down clamp support is still attractive. Here is my alternative.

I hope future readers of Rick's description will take note of the binary progression of the cylinder sizes (1,2,4) instead of the more intuitive arithmetic progression (1,2,3).

Whenever you're designing something that includes a progression of sizes, e.g.,

extensions for a dial indicator
weights for a balance scale
spacers of any sort

consider using a binary progression of the fundamental unit. I'm fairly sure, but haven't yet mathematically proved (in math it's called a conjecture), that a binary progression will always yield the largest continuous sequence of sizes.

With (1,2,3) you can make 1,2,3,4,5,6 but with (1,2,4) you can make 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

With (1,2,3,4) you can make 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 but with (1,2,4,8) you can make 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15

The sum of integers from 1 to n is given by n(n+1)/2 [n=3 → 6 ; n=4 → 10]
The sum of 2^x from x=0 to x=n is given by 2^n - 1 [n=3 → 7 ; n=4 → 15]

It is; but only for mathematicians :-)

I'm with you,but if you don't have anything to do then .... But we have used the step clamps all my life with great success. But his look pretty good.
