Aawww c'mon, for all us newbies, what was the machining sequence ? Maybe something like this ?

The threaded nut is cut whilst still attached to the middle "lump", nut is then parted off so that it hangs loose, can be taped to main workpiece to stop it rattling around, or even make a little jiglet to hold it centred.

The central lump is then cut to size and threaded to fit the nut ?

That's one way. There's a few possibilities. You have to carefully think out the parting off step of the making the nut. Otherwise not that hard. Other than all the material to waste away to get the minor diameter!

I'm intrigued, what are the traps with the parting off, wouldn't it be relatively easy to position a rod for the cutoff part to fall onto to avoid getting spun by the minor diameter ?

Just chamfering the edges before you part off. No chance to flip around later. Any smoothing out of what you have sone on the nut will be a little harder than normal. Just takes thinking all the operations through before you go for it.
