"Sodium methoxide reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide, a corrosive material..." Sodium hydroxide is also known as caustic soda. Acids are corrosive. Bases are caustic.

I just hate bad, sloppy reporting. It takes away from the horror of the story. A biologist/ecologist acquaintance said once to me the notion of sustainable and humans is ludicrous. Sadly true, we'll destroy it all.
