One might ask why the cars were parked on a bay when the ice isn't all that thick. The salt water won't help the cars much either.

No red cars there...

A single car all by itself would have likely been fine, but concentrating all of that weight in a nice line was just too much for the 5 or 6 inch inch to handle.
