Craftsman Vise
Picked up this little Craftsman 3 vise from a yard sale over the weekend for $5.00, its one of those sliding jaw cam or friction lock type, it works fine its just that the jaws had a 1 deep cutout in them, I like a little step in the top of the vises jaws but not 1 deep, I know that one inch step was cut that deep intentionally to hold work up off the two ½ guide rods, but it was a reel pain in the azz to clamp something, so I made a couple new jaws with a 1/8 wide X 1/8 deep step in the top, the jaws were made from 4140 steel, hardened, tempered and ground.
As Always Thanks for Looking and Happy Machining
Doug

Nice set of jaws Doug. I still have a few sets to make for myself. Seems like you can never have enough quality jaws!
Cheers, JR

What you did Doug was to buy a little gem of a vice that was actually missing the top jaws But you have rectified that by making your own good job.

Thanks Frank
If you look at the 4th picture it shows the old jaws sitting along beside the new ones I made, I thought the same thing when I bought the vise, I thought someone took them out, only to later discover that their were a set of jaws in it, the old ones were kinda chiken zht if you ask me

Nice Jaws Doug, thanks for sharing it with us! Don't think I've ever seen that style Craftsman vice before and appears to have fairly wide opening. Is there a model number on it? Nice catch for 5 duckets.
I have a little 3" like that but much wimpier and low profile, and my monster (35lbs) 6" Heinrich 6-SV I got for free. Some one had left coolant on it and a rusted up gooey mess and being tossed, a lot of clean up work but a beauty now and no dings in it.
