I've had the pleasure of working with a lot of crane operators and I mean a lot of them. Some were better than others but none ever dropped the load. There was this one time in particular where we had to lift a pair of 3 meter wide 15 meter long platforms then lower them between 2 buildings for the first pick once the rigging was in place the operator raised the platform about half a meter off the trailer then once clear he lowered it to about half a meter or less off the ground then slowly boomed out and down keeping the platform close to the ground until he was satisfied his crane could take the weight extended far enough to reach the area where we needed to place the platform. One of my workers asked me why he was going the wrong way with the platform. I said so make sure his crane is capable of lifting the platform over the buildings and not damage anything. especially his crane.
the time to learn the crane's limitations is not when you are already in trouble.
