Googled to answer duration of this transit. Those answers weren't first, but there are places you can literally touch the canal walls.

That reminds me of riding in a car with my brother when coming very close to another car in a parking lot for example. He would say "another coat of paint and we'd have hit".

When we crossed the Panama Canal in a Cruise ship I touched the walls in the locks.

They have made new bigger locks now.
