Fascinating — that the spindle is being moved laterally — as well as indexing — to 'bump' into the stationary milling tool.
Thanks for pointing that out that the spindle is moving in and out, I missed that ...that is awesome !! I also missed the belt driven milling cutter the first go round and was really scratching my head wondering how it did that ?!!

IIRC Lindsay Publications had texts on Rose Engines. A serious mistake in not collecting a few. They're capable of all kinds of ornate patterns, for flat or contoured profiles, since 1600's, probably earlier.

$84k. With a lot of ornamentation on a machine tool, clearly for descendants of Louis XVI and commensurate disposable income. Rose turning isn't a big industry, so there is demand, but wonder how many hours are needed to run for return-of-investment, let alone profit?

“Holtzappfel’s Turning and Mechanical Manipulation” (5 volumes) published between 1880 & 1900 is a real mine of information. My late friend, Ken Gaines, kindly lent the set to me. A modern reproduction. I have not been able to buy the whole set, unfortunately.
