I have the idea to build a similar anvil and have the pieces ready to weld together .... must do that soon.
I don't have a big anvil so mine will be used in a vice.
I think that a rectangular bar -say 20x50x100 - in line with the circular bars would be better for a vice.
Am i right ?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Ken....Whatever you do, do not put a solid bar for a vise under all the cylinders at once or you'll never be able to merge the ends of the circular stock....the vise mount, even if it were to run down one cylindery completely...you wouldn't be able to close the ends. Without an anvil, what I have suggested for vise stability is to weld a post just like you would for a hardy...1" x 1" perhaps,....then weld in the long bar over the distance that way you can still close off as much as you can to make the circles completely close.
HOpe this helps...If not just send me a message and I would happy to walk you through it.....Let me see if I can draw something up to illustrate what I mean.....

Thanks for the reply Doc Chuck. Had not thought of the merging the ends. I am unable to open your attachment but I am guessing that I would end up with something like a horizontal ” H “ with the mandrel along the top, and an inverted “ T “ welded to the bottom of the mandrel.
Am I right ??
