So - it is basically a deep socket welded to a handle - or did I miss something?

How about using a hex ball driver for handle; then you'd have another useful tool.
BTW, where can I find a hand torch like that?

that torch is the old Dillon Henrob torch - currently marketed under the Cobra DHC 2000 label. The big claim to fame for them is that they weld, cut, braze with less gas than the typical comet style handpieces used in industry.
Original henrob was invented in Australia and marketed through ag-shows.
the homebuilt aircraft people like them, and you do occasionally find them for sale from old farm clearances... or buy new from cobra.

Those Dillon torches have been around for a long time I bought a used one more than 40 years ago at a flea market, the guy was welding aluminum beer can together with it.
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products
