Oh, look! gardening in the caliche-ridden Southwest! https://www.desertmuseum.org/books/n...sert_soils.php

I've had the fun experience of having to dig through a layer of that to be able to plant a tree at a friends house...we got to the point where we were considering drastic measures "Hey were can we get a half-pound of black powder this time on a Sunday?" ;-)

I found the blow holes an interesting feature...wonder what the weight of that thing is too being dropped from ~60'? Quite a bit of pounding power.

I have to wonder how much extra effect they get by letting it drop by releasing the cable rather than just letting the winch free wheel?

My guess is that they're justifiably afraid of the winch locking or the cable catching with the weight halfway or so down its drop. If that happened it would either break the cable or break the crane or tip it over.

You are probably correct. I wish they showed the weight being attached. The crane certainly rocks back when the weight is released. Do you think they can drive to the next drop point with the weight lifted from the ground?
