DIY Branding Iron – Super Fast Version

DIY Branding Iron – Super Fast Version-100_1153.jpg

This video is a radically shortened version of my original 12-minute video on how to make your own branding iron.

I had a received a few complaints about the original version saying I talk too much and took too long before getting to what these individuals wanted to see.

Most people found my video useful and had appreciation for it, but the few “whiners” that were unhappy are probably very young and have little patience with a retired old fart like me. I’m just not as fast as I used to be. In fact, some may say I’m “half-fast.”

Trying to accommodate everyone, I did some editing of the original, and shortened things up. To appease the whiners, this very short, super-fast version has absolutely no talk at all – not a peep! Of course, I’m sure there will still be a few complainers – I have no doubt there will be bitching about the choice of music used.

The original version is still on my Youtube channel and also posted here on this forum if you want to see all the mistakes I made, hear me blather on about it, and the reasons I did what I did. The new version of the video has been added below and is only a little over a minute in duration.

I don't think 12min was too long. I made a video from my own version about 7min long. I think everything happened too fast...
Later i have decided to make rather too long videos.

Good video. I would watched the long one too.

    Thanks Tuomas,

It seems to be the very young folks that complain. The don't want to sit through any sort discussion where they might learn something, because of course they know everything (at that age). The irony is that they are watching how-to videos...........go figure!

My response to a couple of individuals by making this short version is actually me being a bit of a "smartass." However, I suspect it will go right over their heads.

Thank you for this timely post! Been wanting to make exactly this project. I too am old enough to read directions and do what I am told before plunging into the abyss...

Yeah. If you look hit lists on Spotify, you find out all top songs are very short, about 3min. Seems that people are very impatient these days. Specially youngsters.

That was for sure an extremely condensed video making the branding iron but just enough to explain how it was done.
While I do find that there are some how to videos which are so long they become dificult to sit through the whole thing, this mostly occurs when thee is 10 t0 30 minutes of just watching a lathe or some other machine spinning. I just slide past a lot of the mundane to get past that step When a guy has a running diatribe and is picking up an laying down the same article over and over and over I often wonder if he is ever going to get to his point and move on. In those videos where the camera is set in 1 spot and the guy is doing something like mowing his large lawn or plowing row after row I'll skip to the next event. In videos which have music I turn off my speakers, because I just do not listen to any music ever. Then there are some videos which zip by so fast over certain steps that I have to go back and forth several times to spot what they were doing.
I don't post very many videos because for one I am not much of a film producer for 2 many times there will be such a long expanse of time that lapses during a process it would become boring if not downright painful to watch. Plus I have no idea how to edit my videos.. I rarely do much talking in any of the videos I post for one reason. I can not walk and chew gum at the same time so to speak, and find it difficult to talk and concentrate on what I am doing.

Nice! I'll often watch videos at 2x speed, then slow them down where I want. Note that many of the popular how-to GIFs are just condensed and speeded-up versions of longer videos.

I think the quickie videos are a good strategy to get people interested in your project. You can plug the longer video at the end of the shorter video, or link it in the video description or comments. The problem isn't devoting 12 minutes to a good project. It's allocating 12 minutes to determine whether or not the project is worthwhile.

This is essentially the how-to video equivalent of an Elevator pitch.
