I have a commercial trap where at the back of a cone it has a deflector tongue to send the pellets into a well. Two issues with that are pellets being kicked out of the well by the incoming one and the tongue gets bent back from the impacts.
So, for bounce back I stick crumpled newspaper into the well.
For the bent tongue, I dropped a 1/2 pound bar of lead from a Lee mold into the top. That's getting a bit flattened but generally is holding the tongue in place.
I got a low power target pistol just for this trap. My regular pellet guns are hunting level and would destroy the trap.

Hi jdurand,
That is a nice trap you linked. Looks like you are a much better marksman than me. I needed something significantly larger than a soda-can-sized target to start with. ;)
I made a trap from MDF a few years ago and used shredded paper for inertial absorption, but I only used a low powered spring-actuated BB pistol on that one. Unfortunately, I accidentally left it outside in the rain and it just did what MDF does in the rain... it kind of melted. The design was very similar to the steel one I made above and the coarsely shredded paper I used was about 90% effective. I have not fired too many rounds with the pellet gun yet on the new steel one but we have put it through a fairly exhaustive test with the BB pistol. Probably around 2000 rounds so far between my wife and I, and only about 15 have escaped.
Nice and useful idea
If you want an excellent pellet stopper medium, consider using duct seal. More information here in the description of my pellet trap...
