Great DIY idea !! Just sand need to be calcined before use. I did something similar, only with a foam gun.
Good idea, I tried something similar which worked but needed a lot of total loss sand. A decent face mask is essential as vaporised sand can be toxic. Do not be tempted to use silica (beach) sand which may be free and plentiful.
From Wikipedia:-
Inhaling finely divided crystalline silica is toxic and can lead to severe inflammation of the lung tissue, silicosis, bronchitis, lung cancer, and systemic autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Inhalation of amorphous silicon dioxide, in high doses, leads to non-permanent short-term inflammation, where all effects heal.

olderdan,
Unless you use a synthetic abrasive, or metal shot, nut shells, etc. all sand has silica.
Was your sand a little wet? It looked like it was clumping a little. Also, how about more information on that air compressor, please? Thank you!
