Kind of looks like a new install?

I'm wondering what the deal is with the field below him. I thought it might be covered in plastic, but that doesn't look right. Maybe, sludge spread on the soil and not yet tilled in? Shade netting? Any ideas, anyone?

Massive weed or poppy growing operation? Looks like they're huge screens or covers of some kind.
