    Exciting. Relaxing.
How we identify elements in astronomy.

How do you get the Tesla coil behind the sample seen in astronomy?

Sorry. I did not mean to implicate the Tesla coil into astronomy.
Rather it is this: The Tesla coil is exciting the electrons in the gas to a higher energy state. Pretty much, what happens is the electrons absorb the energy and move further away from the atomic nucleus. When the energy source is removed, the electrons relax to their lower energy state. In doing so, they emit a photon of light whose place in the EM spectrum is unique to that element. Thus, what I was trying to say is, that it is through the analysis of the light spectrum we can see what elements are present in distant stars.
Here is a superior explanation of the process I have minimally described above: https://courses.lumenlearning.com/as...pectral-lines/

    Yeah. What he said.
    Lol

Interesting part is the coil can do it in proximity, whereas neon requires contact, essentially like fluorescent.

My initial comment to "how do they get the coil behind..." was a r-e-a-l-l-y long ladder.
    But too obvious.

Where can I get the vials of gasses? I always wanted to make a Tesla coil, seeing something besides the sparks would be cool.

See if you have a neon sign guy in town, he/she should be able to make you some interesting samples.
