Machine shops at the beginning of the 20th almost all had end grain wood flooring, but they used pointed 6x6s that were 2 to 3 ft long driven into the ground I would imagine that some of those floors are still around today.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Hi Gang:
I've been told stories of shops with block floors. Usually they were oil soaked and if you were in the know you could step on a loose block and squirt your buddy up the pant leg with oil.
Wood block floors are listed as the best in Machinery's Handbook. The book says it is the heat loss, not the hardness of the floor that hurts your feet. When I retired I put 3/4" plywood down on my shop floor and it is much better than scraps of carpet on my feet.
Carl.

There used to be a house in Kerrville Texas that had an end grain floor made out of 18 different trees native to Texas Built in the late 1800s burned down in the early 1970s due to a lightning strike. I remember playing on that floor as a small boy.
