I used to work near Lake Huron. Barges, much smaller than this, would have an excavator on the deck for dredging. The barges were unpowered, and the operator would paddle around with the excavator bucket. It was pretty cool. The excavator would load up the deck of the barge, paddle over to shore, offload, then paddle back and do it again. Think the excavator was already on board for dredging and they grounded it?
