Experiments with Adding a Skeg to an Inflatable Kayak

A skeg reduces the tendency of a kayak to pivot into a crosswind. My Sevylor Colorado has two small skegs but they are no match for even a light crosswind. The newer version of the Colorado has a much larger skeg. How do I add a skeg without permanently modifying my kayak? I ended up with a skeg made from pieces of scrap that does resist crosswinds yet is easily added and removed. However, it does come with a cost.

As a guy addicted to wind surfing for 20 years, I think I would figure out a way to attach a sail and centerboard to that kayak to take advantage of crosswinds.

    Gadgeteer,

I can see that we both suffer from the same "disease" - always on the lookout for ways to improve things. Glad to find a kindred spirit!

    Rick,

You're way ahead of me, but I'm pedaling (and paddling) as fast as I can to catch up. Cheers!
