    A good idea for drilling and tapping but the vertical extension will reduce column rigidity when milling with head all the way up.

    Yes, I agree with you. It will be less rigid should I mill a very large high workpiece that requires the head to be lifted higher. I made the extension primarily to enable tool changes. However, I have also improve rigidity by adding an exoskeleton that makes the column significantly more rigid.
