The tops of the pistons are relatively clean except for some carbon I saw around the edges of a couple of them, the block still shows traces of the head gasket in a couple places. The oil also looks fresh, these tell me someone did an overhaul with the engine still in the vehicle or just a head replacement and was checking to see if he had the oil galleys cleaned out before installing the head. It is not a bad practice if you are only doing an overhaul or a head replacement and not a complete re-build.
When I do a re-build of an engine, I pressure flush all oil passages and water jackets after the block is machined before assembling anything into it to make doubly sure there are no trapped particles left over from vatting and machining.
Never try to tell me it can't be done
