Face milling cutter with edged inserts - video

Very nice cutter. Makes me wish I had a mill. I have to do operations like the ones shown on my lathe. I am curious what kind of carbide you use that can withstand interrupted cuts like that in rusty steel. The carbide I use breaks instantly when I try to cut the rusty scale off of a piece of steel. I end up regrinding a HSS cutter often before I get rid of the scale. After the rust is gone I have no problems with HSS or carbide. I do use HSS the most.

One key to removing the outer scale is to get under it. Small lathes often cannot take a deep enough cut to accomplish this. Also worth noting, bargain priced inserts are no bargain in the long run if you make heavy cuts or run at high speeds But when a single insert costs 15 bucks I more often than not opt for the lessor priced stuff then re grind it as many times as possible. I find that re ground inserts cut better than the new ones do.

Yep, that is my problem. If I get a piece that is really rusted badly and pitted I cannot get deep enough on the first pass to get to good steel. Have to make an auto- stop for my lathe so I can set it to run slow and deep. Then let it run unattended while I work on something else.
