I was priming a quip along the same line.

As kids we did similar stuff but without mechanisms & the tide all the work: fish were not that big.

We also used glass bottles (oyster ones were best) with bread/bait inside. The neck of the bottle would face upstream and a cork/stick was tied to the bottle for its location purposes. A fish would swim into it to get the bread & not be able to reverse out. Great live bait. Worked best with some tide/current movement downstream.

Bet some of you have done similar.
