I wish I'd had this when I was learning how to use one. I have one of those double-ended edge finders and unfortunately I'm self taught. It took more than a little scratching to figure out I was supposed to hold it by the center body and not the end.

We can also locate [via pointed edge finder] accurately scribed centers by setting the point in one axis of scribed line LIGHTLY, then move axis until the body and point measure concentric [by feel or micrometer] then the other and recording each position. Some use a fingernail to detect the offset; I use .003 feeler gauge. Small clean holes can be done the same way.
It's good to have a selection of edge finders. The .200 Ø are popular, but aren't ideal centering on larger shafts. .500 Ø, not having that neck work, until the amount chucked and remaining section won't reach the centerline of bar.
But all-told, I use a static dowel, or round body above flutes of an endmill nearly as often.

there is a sixth use that i missed it was locating a round part vertically in a vice

Happy knowing somewhere, genuine vocational courses are still offered. I'd throttle whoever first decided it was no longer viable elective curriculum.
