Good question, I would like to know as well.

From what I've heard from someone in the placement business, they order granite with a
'thermal finish' that will be outdoors in places like stairways to make the more weather resistant
and have better traction in wet weather.
The small particulates on the surface which are least attached, are blasted out by the heat and force of the moving torch.

So it's a spalling process as is done to concrete.

It's also done to the edges of flagstones to remove the saw marks & make the edge look "natural". Wet the stone, let it soak in & boil the water off with a blue wrench. Spits hot stone flakes all over the place.

Being from Canada, I figured you would have seen this around. It texturizes the stone so it is not as slippery in the winter.

It's probably everywhere and I was just oblivious to it.
