Didn't Pontiac have a version where the steering was done with 2 wheels on the side of the driver's seat.
Seems Mechanix Illustrated magazine had an article about it with Tom McCahill offering opinions, perhaps.

I think Lotus, Saab and Mercedes all had prototypes that replaced the steering wheel with a stupid joystick thing. I guess everybody tries it at some point. Right now Tesla is busy making their cars worse with a silly yoke thing.

Had a model of that Mercury when I was in about the 8th grade. Thought that wrist twist was the coolest thing.

I miss Mechanix Illustrated. Also Popular Science and Popular Mechanics were a whole lot better back in the day.

I've wondered all these years how we came to have WristTwists in our flying automobiles! You know, people used to drive land-cars with these big hoops to steer. And there was only one, so I don't know what they did with their other hand.
