On your suggestion a few years ago,I bought Panavise low profile base. I don’t have the actual vise, but make my own fixtures on 5/8” diameter shanks for projects when required.
Another device I use a lot is a small clamp on articulated vise that clamps to a bench top capable of 360 degree positioning in almost any direction.
