the shafts on these types of ships rarely change direction. What does change is the pitch of the propellor blades. This is what enables the reduction in speed to be done with less possibility of damage. Back in my steaming days it was done by reversing the direction of the steam turbine or the main diesel engines. This was often referred to as a "crash back." It was easy to break things and knocked loose everything that wasn't bolted down.

Yep, as mentioned above. it would be very difficult to change direction of that propeller shaft at speed. The water forcing that prop to keep turning one direction while trying to "shift gears". Just like a truck going down hill if you don't get it downshifted before you get going too fast, you are NOT going to be able to do it at all.

Curious what that looked like from the side with some perspective for the speed change.
