Yup, real veg oil filtration machines filter to 3 microns, are the size of a grocery cart, cost $12,000 dollars each and operate under high pressure using two stage filtration.

That little machine does basically nothing.

Back in the day when I used to run my Duramax on VO (2008-time frame), I used to filter down to the 1-micron level with a centrifuge. You can remove all of the food particulate matter and improve color, but cooking chemically changes the oil in a way that cannot be renewed. I used to get my oil from a commercial cooking facility that cooked food that was then flash frozen. They used to monitor the pH level of the oil. When it reached a certain point, they swapped it out. I was still golden in color and could have been used straight in an old 6.5 diesel without filtering. I used to pick up 550 gallons at a time. My final cost ended up around $1.05-$1.10/gallon when diesel was over $5.00. That was after the approximately $4-5K invested in the garage filtering set up and the equipment I had on the truck. Good times, but time consuming.

The problem with burning used veg oil is it's very hard on the the valve train, that "$1.05-$1.10/gallon" is worth roughly $4.00 unprocessed right out of the kitchen today.

That price was taking into consideration my processing costs as well (electricity, clean up materials, etc). It has definitely gone up since then from what I have seen. My diesel actually ran quieter when on VO. When injected at the proper temp, VO burns very similar to diesel. If I remember correctly, my system would not switch over to VO till the VO temp was at 170deg. The biggest thing was remembering to purge back to diesel before you reached your destination.

A friend of mine had two identical RAM pick ups with 150 liter WVO tanks in the truck beds, one for him one for his wife, he eventually had to put in a control whereby his wife couldn't shut off the truck without switching the tank over.
